Horse farm fencing is a very good investment in horse care. It is very helpful having the horses on the property as they will keep away nuisances like dogs and trespassers. Good fencing can also be a parameter on which the marketing value of a ranch can be evaluated. Fencing has to be done keeping in mind that the horses are completely secure and injury free. The fencing also gives a more aesthetic look to the ranch and augments its value. Some types of fencing have been discussed in the following.
1. Wooden fencing
The wooden rails are made up of planks or logs of cedar wood. The planks are generally of 2 x 10 inches held with posts of diameter not less than 4 inches in diameter. The most important disadvantage of this fencing is that the horses can get injured by the wooden splinters, which come out of broken and damaged fences.
2. Vinyl or plastic fencing
Plastics and vinyl fencing are a good option as they are specially meant for the horses. They imitate wood without the need to be painted. They are relatively cheaper and a good substitute for wood. The synthetic variants of the fences are reinforced with wires. These may be the cause of concern as the horses may get tangled and injure themselves.
3. Electrical fencing
Electric fencing is a method of fencing which may not be a physical barrier, but more of a psychological one. The animals are contained by the fence by short and harmless electrical shocks. These types of fences are particularly suited for big areas and pastures, where the horses have ample space for roaming around. The electrical fencing may be solar powered. It would be advisable to consult your local authorities before opting for fencing as they are not permitted in certain municipalities. Furthermore, the horses can get entangled into the wires and seriously injure themselves.
4. Wire fencing
This type of fencing should not be done unless it is specifically needed. Barb wiring for fences seem to be a good idea, but it may injure horses pretty badly.
